In recent years, the field of cancer immunotherapy has seen important advances. Much of this has occurred in the area of monoclonal antibodies, which have helped to establish treatment paradigms in a variety of malignancies. Nevertheless, cancer remains an enigmatic disease, and many challenges remain in the quest to control and treat cancer. This article describes these challenges and highlights how patients and their oncologists can best leverage this evolving technology to better treat and control this disease.[A case of pulmonary aspergilloma in which a large bronchopleural fistula was effectively treated with bronchial stent placement].
A case of aspergilloma in which a large bronchopleural fistula was successfully treated with bronchial stent placement is reported. A 53-year-old man presented with complaints of fever and cough. Chest roentgenogram showed a huge right upper lung cavity with a pseudoabscess. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy showed a huge right upper lobe bronchus which could not be traversed by the bronchial forceps. CT scan and MRI demonstrated a filling defect in the right upper lobe bronchus. Transbronchial biopsy specimens were negative for malignancy. At operation, a large bronchopleural fistula was found and removed. Following the removal, a large bronchial stent was placed in the right upper lobe bronchus. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful and he was discharged on the 20th postoperative day.Synchrotrons: Increasing Electron Energy Resolution by Atomic Number: From Liquid Xenon Detectors to Highly Polarized Radioactive Sources.
Synchrotrons have recently been successfully used as radiographic sources to study scattering at the nanometer scale. Novel developments in imaging techniques have made them particularly suited for the investigation of metallic nanostructures that undergo anomalous magnetic and electric dipole enhancements. We report on the first successful studies of the anomalous magnetic dipole scattering of the ordered SmB6 nanoparticles. By merging atomic number and anomalous scattering contributions, such highly sensitive techniques are capable of studying samples of unprecedented size and purity and open up a new field of research.Features
